Notes and a password vault for Windows and Android

Your sticky notes, safe from prying eyes.

Matemasie replaces Sticky Notes. You keep the little colored notes on your desktop: the grocery list, the plumber’s number. The difference is that everything is encrypted on your device, and the notes that are nobody else’s business lock themselves.

Windows 10 and 11, Android 8 and later. iPhone and iPad coming.

How your notes are protected

Yellow note “Saturday groceries”: plantains, grilled fish, tomatoes, onions, scotch bonnets, condensed milk, dish soap, batteries for the remote. Pink note “Gift ideas”: wax print fabric and a cookbook for Mom, a bike helmet for Karim, a board game for Fatou. Blue note “Call the plumber before Thursday”: leak under the kitchen sink, he only comes in the morning.

Notes

Right where they were, on your desktop.

One note per window, wherever you put it, still there after a restart. The Sticky Notes colors. Ctrl+Alt+N opens a new note even when Matemasie is in the background. Bold text, checkboxes, pasted images, and a search that goes through every note at once.

Your Sticky Notes come over to Matemasie in one go, colors included. Matemasie reads a copy, so the original stays untouched.

Deleted one too fast? It’s waiting in the trash. And every note keeps its earlier versions, just in case.

Matemasie main window: a list of colored notes, including the gate code and the home Wi-Fi, both protected and marked with a padlock.

Sensitive notes

The gate code has no business being in plain sight.

Some notes shouldn’t be readable by whoever walks past your screen: the alarm code, the router password. Mark them as sensitive. They get a second layer of encryption and only open with Windows Hello, your fingerprint or your passphrase. In the list, all you see is a padlock.

Gate code

Building: 4719# Spare mailbox key is with the building manager.

Demo: when the note becomes sensitive, its text is replaced with ciphertext, then the padlock closes.

The vault

And a vault for everything else.

Passwords and card numbers sit next to your notes, in records designed for them. Copy any field in one click; the password stays hidden until you ask to see it.

Wi-Fi record “Home Wi-Fi”: network Home-5G, hidden password, WPA2 security, with a button to show the connection QR code.
Logins
Websites and apps, with several addresses and the recovery email.
Wi-Fi
Your home network, plus a QR code to show guests instead of spelling out the password.
Cards and accounts
Bank card, IBAN, and the number to call if it’s lost.
Documents
Passport, ID card, driver’s license, with their expiry dates.
Licenses
Software keys and the email of the account that bought them.
Generator
Passwords and easy-to-remember passphrases, tuned the way you like.
Vault health
Weak or reused passwords get flagged.
Bitwarden import
Bring your records over from a Bitwarden export, encrypted or not.
For IT people
SSH and API keys, remote desktop and SSH connections, Royal TS import.

Sync

From one device to another, without going through us.

Matemasie has no server. To get your notes on your phone, you pick storage you already own: Google Drive, OneDrive, a WebDAV server, a shared folder, or just your home Wi-Fi. Each note is encrypted before it leaves the device. Google or Microsoft see files, their size and their date, never what’s inside.

  1. Your PC
  2. Your Drive
  3. Your phone
The note leaves your PC encrypted, waits in your Drive as an unreadable file, and only becomes readable again on your phone. No Matemasie server in between.

A new device only gets in with the approval of one you already use: the same code appears on both screens, and you confirm they match.

Security

What protects your notes, in plain words.

  1. Everything is encrypted on the device.

The notes database is encrypted on disk. Sensitive notes, the vault and sync get a second layer, with AES-256-GCM. These are public methods that have been studied for years.

  2. A passphrase we never know.

One passphrase opens your sensitive notes, the vault and sync. It never leaves your devices. We can’t read it, and we can’t reset it.

  3. A recovery key, to keep on paper.

It’s shown once, when you set things up. If you forget your passphrase, this is what gets you back in. Without one or the other, nobody can open your notes, us included. Keep it with your important papers.

  4. A lost phone can be removed from the vault.

You remove it from another device: the vault keys change right away, and if the phone reconnects, it wipes its data. If it stays offline, it still asks for your passphrase, the fingerprint stops being enough after fourteen days, and its data is erased after ten failed attempts.

  5. What Matemasie can’t prevent.

Malware running under your account while your notes are open sees what you see. No notes app can get around that. Keep your system up to date and only install software you trust.

Matemasie asks for no account, shows no ads, doesn’t track how you use it and sends nothing when it crashes. This site doesn’t set cookies either.

Why Matemasie

I kept secrets on sticky notes.

I’ve used Sticky Notes every day for years. My screen is covered in them. One day I realized that some of those notes should never have been there, readable by the first person to walk behind me.

Then I nearly lost the settings for all my connections.

I wanted something simple: my notes, just like before, but kept safe. Encrypted on my own machine, copied wherever I decide, without handing anything to someone else’s server. That’s where Matemasie came from.

Mate Masie is an Adinkra symbol of the Akan peoples of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. It means “what I hear, I keep.” That’s what I expect from a notes app.

Rachidi SOULE, founder of MOSOBI

Four linked ovals: the symbol of wisdom and discretion. It’s traditionally printed on cloth with a stamp carved from a calabash.
